We are in the middle of a really hot summer here in Hong Kong so I was very excited when I found peaches in our local supermarket recently. Growing up in Australia, peaches were a summer staple for my family. I always loved summer for the incredible range of seasonally available fruit (think peaches, nectarines, plums, apricots, strawberries, grapes and so on) that my mother used to buy. I always knew it was summer once we started eating stone fruits!
I decided to offer some peach to my boy as I thought it would make a great finger food. The flesh of a ripe peach is so lovely and soft that I figured they would be easy for my boy to munch. I had no idea that peach would be such a huge hit! My boy sat in his highchair and devoured slice after slice of fresh peach, screaming in frustration if he dropped some, trying with hurried exasperation to get each slice into his mouth as fast as possible. My husband and I were absolutely gobsmacked at just how much he enjoyed eating this wonderful fruit.
Peaches are a great first food for baby. They are a very good source of Vitamin C whilst also containing good amounts of Vitamin A, niacin, potassium and dietary fibre. A ripe peach is naturally sweet and easy for little tummies to digest.
Preparation
For those following Baby Led Weaning preparation is simple. Following the seam of the peach, cut in half and twist to open into two halves. Remove the stone before using a peeler to remove the skin from the peach. Slice into manageable pieces and offer to baby.
If you are choosing to puree, after peeling the skin off the peach and slicing into wedges, steam the peach slices, either in a steamer or in the microwave with a little water, for 4-5 minutes. Once the peach slices are cool enough to handle, puree in a blender until smooth.
How does your little one like peaches?
